The structural clue
How the ladder gives itself away
FISH → WISH and WAND → SAND attach both endpoints through first-letter changes. Inside the W cluster, WISH → WISE changes the fourth letter, WISE → WINE the third, WINE → WIND the fourth again, and WIND → WAND the second.
- StepSolve the middle clues as WISH, WISE, WINE, WIND, and WAND. Their common opening W marks them as one connected block.
- StepOrder the block as WISH → WISE → WINE → WIND → WAND by checking the changing positions four, three, four, and two.
- StepAttach FISH before WISH and SAND after WAND through first-letter swaps. The endpoints satisfy the water-and-land beach clue.

When most rungs share an opening letter, temporarily ignore that column and compare the remaining positions. The endpoint clue explains the relationship, but the internal W-word sequence proves the order.
Endpoint result: FISH + SAND = TWO THINGS FOUND AT THE BEACH.
