The structural clue
How the ladder gives itself away
MARK → PARK → PORK → WORK forms the structural spine: the chain changes the first letter, then the vowel, then the first letter again. Above it, CASK → MASK changes only the opening letter, and MASK → MARK changes the third. CASE can therefore attach only to CASK through a final-letter swap.
